This is the Traditional Scale of Hardness Collection and a Test Kit. Includes Streak Plate ,Penny, Glass Plates, Nail and nine specimens 1" X 1 1/2" number coded.

There are NO asbestos forming minerals in this kit.

Designed for general classroom use, kit includes specimens in the following groups: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, ores, gemstones and rock forming minerals. 50 specimens approximately1" x 1". Includes the Rocks and Minerals Study Guide.

Amphibolite excluded from this set - this mineral is an asbestos forming mineral.

45 specimens, approximately 1 1/2" x 1 1/2", includes 15 each of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Each category of rock is well represented and forms an integrated classroom study unit.

The Igneous Rock Bag is an economy collection of 6 commonly known igneous rocks. Igneous rocks are formed by the cooling of molten rock, either magma or lava. Each generous specimen is 11/4" to 1 1/2" and is contained in a zip lock bag with a label.

The Metamorphic Rock Bag is an economy collection of 6 commonly known metamorphic rocks. Metamorphic rocks are formed by pressure and heat that may or may not be influenced by the introduction of chemically active solutions. Each generous specimen is 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" and is contained in a zip lock bag with a label.

PHYLLITE – REFLECTIVE SHEEN, USUALLY GREY BLACK OR GREENISH

GNEISS – BANDED APPEARANCE AND TEXTURE, USUALLY LIGHT IN COLOUR (CAN BE DARK), HAS RIBBONS OF DIFFERENT COLOURED MINERALS.

QUARTZITE – WHITE TO PALE GREY COLOUR, GRAINY SURFACE WITH SANDPAPER TEXURE

GREEN SCHIST – DARK OR LIGHT GREEN, EVEN TEXTURE ****some kits contain MARBLE instead of GREEN SCHIST

Sedimentary rocks are formed from preexisting rocks through the processes of erosion, followed by compaction or chemical precipitation.
